The Church Improvement Fund (CIF) was established to provide financial support to PCCs wishing to improve the facilities of their church buildings. The aim is to future-proof mission by making church buildings fit for 21st century mission and ministry. The fund has recently been expanded to include funding for net zero projects – these are works which will allow a church to enable and enhance mission and ministry, whilst implementing a demonstrable reduction in their carbon footprint.
There are two strands of the fund – Net Zero Projects and Church Improvement Projects. The application criteria and process are slightly different for the two strands. To be eligible for the grant, Parish Share must have been paid in full for two years prior to the application and the PCC must commit to paying Parish Share in the future. For full details on both strands please read the Application Guide.
If you have any questions or want to discuss your ideas, and whether they will qualify for a grant, please get in touch for advice. Please contact Jo Hands, the secretary to the Church Improvements Fund at jo.hands@coventry.anglican.org.
Church Improvement Projects
The next application deadline is 31st August 2023.
Potential applicants should note that funds within the Church Improvement Fund are low. Therefore, at present, it is unlikely that large grants will be approved.
Applications to the Church Improvements Fund will be considered from any parish specifically for projects designed to improve their facilities. Parishes may apply for a grant of 75% of the project (maximum grant £5,000).
How to apply
Proposals should be submitted on the Church Improvements Fund application form and submitted to Jo Hands at jo.hands@coventry.anglican.org who will confirm receipt and provide you with a reference number.
Applications will be considered twice a year by the Diocesan Mission Fund Committee. Closing dates for applications are 31st March and 31st August respectively for the April and September meetings of the DMF Committee.
Net Zero Projects
The next stage 2 application deadline is 31st July 2023
Funding for works which will allow a church to enable and enhance mission and ministry, whilst implementing a demonstrable reduction in their carbon footprint. Parishes may apply for a grant of 50% of the project (maximum £25,000).
Because of the technical complexities and the importance of selecting technologies that are best suited to the individual circumstances of each building, a two-stage application process is in place. Stage 1 is an expression of interest, Stage 2 is the full application.
We will work with you to research and appraise projects, especially those involving renewable energy technology.
How to apply
Stage 1: Please completed an expression of interest form. This should be submitted to Jo Hands, Governance and Grants Officer at jo.hands@coventry.anglican.org who will confirm receipt. The expression of interest form will be reviewed by a Diocesan Net Zero adviser, we will aim to contact you within three weeks of confirmation of receipt to discuss your proposals in more detail and advise you whether to make a full stage 2 application. Stage 1 applications can be submitted at any time.
Stage 2: Once invited, please complete the Net Zero Project application form. This should be submitted to Jo Hands at jo.hands@coventry.anglican.org who will confirm receipt. Applications will be reviewed by a technical panel and recommendations will be made to the Diocesan Mission Fund Committee. The technical panel are advisory and decision-making remains with the DMFC and/or Bishop’s Council (depending on the amount of grant applied for). Therefore stage 2 applications for Net Zero Projects should be submitted no later than 28th February and 31st July so that they can be prepared for the DMF Committee meetings in April and September.
