Coventry’s termly CMD programme is built around three strands: Core Skills, Fresh Thinking, and Wellbeing. The intention of the programme is to focus on those things that are central to the life, faith and ministry of clergy and licensed lay leaders.
All sessions are free, and can be booked through Equip Hub.
Please contact the Director of Ministry & Leadership with suggestion or requests for future programmes, or if there is a subject or issue that you would like to lead a CMD session on.
Continuing Ministerial Development – Autumn 2025
Welcome to the Autumn Programme for Continuing Ministerial Development (CMD).
Please give careful consideration to which of these events would be most helpful for your ministry. It is required that all clergy who receive a stipend attend at least two of these sessions each year (in addition to attending the Bishop’s Study Morning, Study Day and Safeguarding Day). So, if you have not yet attended a CMD programme event this year, please identify two of these events that will resource you and your ministry.
Licensed Readers are encouraged to attend at least one learning or training event from one of the diocesan programmes (including this and the Pathways programme) each year. Other lay leaders are warmly welcome at any session that will resource their ministry.

Leading more collaboratively - forum
Thursday 25th September, 2pm-4.30pm
Venue: St James, Fletchamstead
Collaborative leadership is something we talk about, and aspire to, but that isn’t always so easy to put into practice.
This ‘forum’ session is an opportunity to learn from one another’s wisdom and experience. If you are passionate about collaborative leadership – please come. If you are struggling to put the collaborative ideal into practice – please come. If you know this is something you could do more of, but don’t know where to start – please come.
One key to build an effective collaboration is to plan that collaboration together. So if there are colleagues with whom you would like to collaborate more effectively, bring them with you.
This forum session will be co-hosted by Rob Harrison and Anna Naish

Racial justice in a white-led church
Tuesday 7th October, 10am-12.30pm
Venue: St George’s, Rugby
The call for racial justice can feel remote in a church where community is predominantly white. It takes a different complexion in churches that enjoy a rich ethnic mix.
As we enter Black History Month, this session will explore the dynamics and assumptions of ‘white privilege’, and consider the call for all of us to live out God’s love for all his people. We will discuss societal attitudes to immigration and the Church of England’s call for us to move ‘from lament to action’.
Led by Neil Masih, we will hear the perspectives and experiences of colleagues from UKME communities, but this is a session primarily for those of us who are white church leaders, or lead in churches that are not highly represented in ethnic diversity.

Telling the Christmas story afresh - workshop
Wednesday 15th October, 2pm-4.30pm
Venue: St Nicholas, Radford Semele
Come December we will be seeking to stimulate fresh engagement with a story that hasn’t changed for two thousand years, addressing a huge variety of audiences including people who have heard the story hundreds of times before. It isn’t easy to come up with new ideas.
This workshop will provide opportunity to share ideas that have worked in the past and to try out new ideas in a secure space. Rob Harrison will bring insight and experience from his parallel career as a dramatist, broadcaster, storyteller and novelist, sharing practical tips for providing new perspectives on an old story.

Challenging Theology
Wednesday 22nd October, 1.00pm - 4.30pm
Venue: Moreton Morrell
Whether it is being challenged by particular theological themes or challenging the interpretations we have inherited, this gathering is an opportunity for open, honest and faithful discussion in a safe and respectful environment. It is an opportunity to raise questions, challenge assumptions and test ideas.
This new feature in the CMD programme, is imagined to become an open learning community which will explore a wide variety of challenging themes from term to term, guided by some of the diocese’s notable theological thinkers. The session will begin with an invitation to identify the challenges that people would like to explore. This will be followed by considering the challenge of interpreting Genesis 1-11 for secular minds of the 21st century.
The event will start by sharing lunch together. Please bring your own packed lunch.

Neurodiversity-friendly worship
Thursday 23rd October, 10am-12.30pm
Venue: St Laurence, Foleshill
As our society become more aware of the range of neurodivergence that impacts people’s lives, there is a need for churches to be intentional about providing for different needs and preferences. Whether this is done by clear messaging or by setting up new worshipping communities there is a wide range of ways that people can be included, loved and provided for.
Colleagues who understand themselves to be neurodivergent are warmly encouraged to support this event and share their insights. We hope the session will include expertise from beyond the Church – yet to be confirmed.
The workshop will be hosted by Kate Pellereau & Rob Harrison
