St Nicholas Church in the Alcester Minster recently hosted a unique and heartwarming celebration as Roger and April exchanged vows in a 'Messy Wedding'—a service that reflected their journey to faith.
The couple first became involved with the church through Messy Church, an initiative designed to engage families in creative and interactive faith-based activities. Through this, they found faith in Jesus, attended an Alpha course, and were both baptized in 2024. Their wedding was a joyous occasion, incorporating elements of their spiritual growth and the inclusive, hands-on nature of Messy Church.
The ceremony was officiated by the Revd Katie Cross and the Redv Daniel Corlett, both of whom had been instrumental in the couple’s faith journey. April, the bride, made a memorable entrance in a beautiful dress paired with hand-painted trainers, embracing the spirit of creativity and individuality.
During the service, attendees paused for 'messy' activities, which included making paper buttonholes, decorating wedding cupcakes, crafting a heart-shaped keepsake with everyone’s fingerprints, and writing prayers of blessing on wooden hearts. The wedding resumed with the formal vows, followed by the entire congregation placing their prayers in front of the couple, offering blessings in God’s name.
Following the service, the church provided a wedding tea with sandwiches, cakes, and celebratory fizz. Roger and April departed amidst a sea of waving streamers, symbolizing the love and support of their church family.
Reflecting on the occasion, Rev Katie Cross, the Rector, shared her joy:
“It was such a joyful day, bringing together our congregation, Messy Church families, and Roger and April’s family as we celebrated all that God has done in their lives and their love for one another. The church family really pulled out all the stops, decorating, supporting, and providing for this family, who rely on the local food bank. I even received a specially commissioned Messy Church stole for the occasion.”
The impact of this special event continues to resonate, as other members of Messy Church and their families have expressed interest in exploring faith and even considering a church wedding themselves.
Roger and April’s 'Messy Wedding' was a testament to faith, love, and community—an inspiring reminder of the church’s role in bringing people together in celebration and spiritual growth.
