Thought for the Week from Bishop John

From today’s Psalm:

Blessed are those …..who delight in the law of the Lord and on his law they meditate day and night. Ps.1.2.

Psalm 1 is the gateway into the book of Psalms not only because it is the first psalm but also because it points to the relationship we should have with all the psalms that follow. We are both to delight in God’s word and to meditate upon it. We are to let it go not only into our heads but our hearts. ‘Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly’ Col.3.16, writes Paul. Our relationship with the word of God significantly determines our fruitfulness in God’s purposes. The Psalmist continues: ‘They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in due season, and their leaves do not wither. In all that they do, they prosper.’ Ps.1.3.

How hungry are we for the word of God?

How often do we feed on it?

Do we invite the Holy Spirit’s help when we do?

Jesus said to the disciples and Jesus says to us, his disciples today:

‘The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.’ John 6.36.
