Acceler8 news

Friday 18th September 2020

The Acceler8 team continue to work with 20s and 30s in the final few months of the project. Due to Covid-19, many of our activities have moved to online platforms like Zoom or have had to be put on hold until we can meet safely. Although this time has provided many challenges, there are many positives in terms of young adult engagement and, like the Church as a whole, we have been learning a lot.

We will communicate more news as government restrictions change

24th September 2019

The new academic year signifies a new season for many of the Acceler8 team with our churches hoping to attract and welcome new students. After four challenging but fruitful years at All Saints: St. Anne, Ian Sweeney has felt God's call to start Vine, a house based community seeking to follow Jesus together. We welcome Neil Masih who has recently joined us and is based at St. Paul's Church in Foleshill. Meanwhile, we are continuing our gatherings aimed at uniting 20s and 30s from churches across the Diocese. Two have taken place in Coventry and one was hosted in Leamington Spa with further events planned shortly in other areas too.

26th March 2019

Are you in your 20s and 30s and attend a church in the Diocese of Coventry? We invite you to a gathering of young adults from all across the area on Thursday 4th April from 7.30pm at Draper's Bar, Coventry, CV1 5RU. It's a great chance to form friendships, encourage each other in our faith and see what God is doing with 20s and 30s throughout our Diocese. Several members of the Acceler8 team will be there and we have significant interest from people from a variety of churches. Please spread the word.

We hope to organise more of these meet ups in the future and plan to tour around various deaneries where possible.

23rd October 2018

On Saturday 24th November between 10am and 4pm, the Acceler8 team will host a free conference called "Reaching 20's-30's - Exploring the Joys and Challenges for Churches". Tickets are available via. the Eventbrite website.

Reaching 20's and 30's can be a challenge for churches. How can we encourage our churches to attract and disciple the students, young professionals, young families and singles making up the so-called 'Missing Generation'? Through seminars and talks, this event will provide practical advice and ideas to encourage churches of all traditions in their ministry to and with young adults. The day will be hosted by the Acceler8 Team who support churches across Coventry Diocese in discipling 20's and 30's.

This event is free and lunch and refreshments will be provided. If you have any dietary requirements, please let Kim know, at

In addition to this event, Development Leaders from the Acceler8 team will also be sharing some of what we have learned and experienced in working with 20s and 30s at the "Into a Shared Future" event at Coventry Cathedral on Saturday 3rd November. This promises to be a lively and informative day celebrating 100 years of the Diocese of Coventry with worship, teaching, workshops, children's programmes and lunch.

22nd May 2018

Earlier this month, we were delighted to be joined by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, for a special event aimed at 20s and 30s as part of his week long visit to celebrate 100 years of the Diocese of Coventry.

Archbishop Justin was on top form as he took questions from young adults at All Saints Church, Chilvers Coton (Nuneaton) where he served as a curate in the early 90s. Questions ranged from the light hearted and personal, such as his favourite music, to challenging theological topics and questions that inspired fascinating, moving stories of his adventures in ministry and life.

The event was very well received with lots of positive feedback and several people signing up for the forthcoming Nuneaton and Bedworth Deanery Alpha Course.

Our team enjoyed spending time with the Archbishop before and after the event. He shared a lot of wisdom and took the time to share some of his learning from years of Christian ministry. We will be sharing a video of this event soon.

26th September 2017

The Acceler8 team meet monthly to encourage and pray for each other, share learning and receive training relating to various aspects of 20s and 30s ministry.

September's Team Day was blessed by a visit from the Bishop of Coventry, The Right Reverend Dr Christopher Cocksworth, who spoke to us on Empowering Leadership, one of the 8 Essential Qualities of Healthy Growing Churches. Bishop Christopher shared many pearls of wisdom and answered questions from the Development Leaders.

We are getting together again next week for the Discipleship Challenge Workshop led by Freedom In Christ Ministries. This is a public event at St. Mary's Church, Leamington Spa on Tuesday 3rd October between 9.30am and 4.30pm. It is an interactive workshop for those wanting to transform the challenges of discipleship with 18-30s into opportunities for fruitful, authentic discipleship. We say a fond farewell to Gareth and Jenny Irvine as Gareth is set to take up the post of Vicar of St. Laurence, Foleshill in October.

Gareth has been 20s-30s Development Leader at St. John's, Westwood while Jenny has held the same role at St. Chad's, Wood End since May 2016. They both leave the Acceler8 team to fully embrace the exciting new adventure that God has in store for them at St. Laurence.

It has been a pleasure to have Gareth and Jenny on our team. They have blessed us with encouragement and rich insight developed through their experiences working with 20s and 30s in and around their churches, missional communities and as Pioneer Ministers of Saint Aidan's. We hope that their time working on the Acceler8 project will prove fruitful at St. Laurence and look forward to staying in touch and seeing what God does through their ministry, especially with the young adults of Foleshill.

Please pray for Gareth, Jenny and their children Jessica and Caleb as they prepare to embark on this new chapter of their lives.

24th July 2017

We were delighted to receive team training on coaching and empowering leaders from International NCD Director, Christoph Schalk. Christoph gave us two hours of his wisdom on Wednesday 12th July before delivering the 'Empowering People' talk at St. Mary's Church, Leamington Spa.

Alongside his role with Natural Church Development, Christoph is a psychologist and has coached extensively across a wide range of industries worldwide. We benefited greatly from his experience and he encouraged reflection and revelation upon some of the challenges and opportunities we are facing within our church contexts.

In September 2016, a community house will be launched in Charlecote, a small village 5 miles from Warwick. This will be a Christian community ideal for those who wish to live in a regular pattern of prayer, worship and bible study. It will be especially suitable for those interested in reimagining rural mission and ministry amongst 20s and 30s.

On Tuesday 1st December, members of the 20s to 30s Leadership Scheme came together with some of the Acceler8 team to compete in a fun but surprisingly gruelling Go Karting evening. They were joined by Archdeacon Missioner, The Venerable Morris Rodham. A good time was had by all.

12th November 2015

The Diocese of Coventry are pleased to announce the appointment of four 20s-30s Development Leaders to support the Acceler8 project. These are Jonny Dant who is based at St. James’, Styvechale, Mark Seabourne at St. Mary’s, Leamington, Ian Sweeney at St. Anne and All Saints and Beks Rothnie, whose existing role at Urban Hope, Coventry has been expanded.

The Acceler8 team, led by Kim Morgan-Jones, are tasked to bring people within the 20s and 30s age group to Christian faith and discipleship. They will work alongside their vicars, staff teams, PCCs and congregations to help to fulfil the Diocese’s Mission Purpose of Worshipping God, Making New Disciples and Transforming Communities within a younger generation context.

Considering the breadth of this age range and diversity within their respective parishes, each Development Leader is given freedom to take whichever missional approaches are appropriate to their specific context and God’s direction. Ultimately, they have been chosen to best fulfil the Diocesan Mission Purpose of Worshipping God, Making New Disciples, and Transforming Communities, via the 8 Essential Qualities of healthy churches, with specific application and relevance for 20s and 30s.

Development Leaders will progressively share their learning and insights with other churches and deaneries in the Diocese who wish to become more effective in ministry and mission to this age profile.

Kim said “The appointment of the new Acceler8 Development Leaders is an exciting progression in the diocese-wide 20s-30s focus. Each member of the team brings different skills and gifts which will be used in mission and ministry to 20s-30s in their placement church, as well as wider in their deanery and across the diocese.”
