Farewell from Steve Tash of Salford Priors
Just a note from me to say farewell to you all in the Coventry diocese. I am to be Vicar of St Oswald’s, Fulford in the Diocese of York and will leave here late in February. I know there will be few opportunities to say goodbye to many friends and colleagues throughout the Diocese, so through Surge, I can say many thanks to you for your love and friendship over many years.   We value your prayers for this new phase, a move from rural to suburban ministry. I wonder if they play cricket in Yorkshire.

In addition to being a world leader in his area of scientific expertise, he is a well-known broadcaster and presenter on television and radio. He has written and presented many well-received programmes for BBC 1 including Making Babies (1996), The Human Body, Secret Life of Twins (1999), Superhuman, and Child of our Time (2000 and 2004).

Lord Winston has a Jewish background and has written and spoken widely on the relationship between faith and science. In particular, he has been critical of the way some of the so-called ‘new atheists’ (eg Professors Richard Dawkins and Daniel Dennett) have characterised both faith and the scientific enterprise and has emphasised the scientific community’s responsibility for encouraging public participation in debates over advances in science/medical technology (http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2007/apr/25/evolution.religion

Bethlehem School
Some time ago a group of Syrian Orthodox Christians, originally from the borders of Turkey and Syria, made their home in the ‘little town of Bethlehem.

For many years the Community dreamed of a school of their own where their traditions and especially where the Aramaic language could be spoken. In 2000, a group of pilgrims from the Coventry Diocese visited this Community in Bethlehem and witnessed the plight of the children. They were so moved on their return that SOCS was established to raise funds to help the Community’s dream. The first intake of children took place in September 2003 with just 15 children of kindergarten age.

If you would like to make a donation to support the Mar Ephraim School, please send a cheque payable to ‘Coventry Cathedral International Account (Bethlehem School’ and send it to Mr John Radford, 22 Sunningdale Avenue, Kenilworth CV8 2BZ.
