SEPTEMBER 2009
For Women – A Time to Relax – Lunchtime Meditations
Due to popular demand the Ladies Lunchtime Meditations at Coventry Cathedral are now taking place monthly on the first Thursday of each month from 12.45-2.00pm in the Lecture Hall. The next one is on 3rd September 2009. Do bring your friends (and your lunch!) and enjoy a cup of tea with others, then an hour of guided peace and relaxation with God. Free, friendly and informal, this is ideal for all women, whatever age or background. For more information contact Zoe Bell on 024 7652 1223.
Community Cashback
A new scheme called ‘Community Cashback’ has been announced targeted at giving "local people a say in how £4 million of recovered criminal assets should be spent in their communities".
To qualify, "The projects should be related to nuisance, anti-social or criminal behaviour or its impact on the community.
- Projects could focus on one or several neighbourhoods
- Projects should be community focused and make a noticeable difference on the community
- Projects must demonstrate value for money, be able to be delivered quickly and their impact should be clearly evaluated
- Outcomes must be visible to the community
Although Church/churches are clearly community bodies they will need to identify projects, which deliver on the above - with such a relatively small sum to play with, as there could be stiff competition for the grants. A case could made for repairing stolen lead on an historic church (especially when the insurance doesn't cover the full cost) but it is probable that the funders will want to see more ‘people-based’ than ‘thing-based’ projects. Alternatively, restoring/creating a wildlife friendly churchyard were it has been subject to vandalism etc may be eligible." http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Nl1/Newsroom/DG_178917
Kenilworth St Nicholas
St Nicholas Church Kenilworth is holding a special healthcare service at 6.30pm on Sunday 18th October 2009. Invitations will be going out in September to all those who work in the NHS both here or in neighbouring towns, as well as carers and the general public.
The hope is that the service will encourage us to give thanks for our health service and all carers and to ask for wisdom concerning any future cuts.
The speaker at the service will be The Reverend Dame Sarah Mullally, The Rector of Sutton in Surrey and formerly the Chief Nursing Officer.
Traditionally Chief Nursing Officers are near retirement and career civil servants. Sarah, by contrast, was nowhere near retirement and was from hospital life. It caused a stir but the professionals on the front line thought it was a great move. As CNO Sarah advised the Prime Minister, three Secretaries of State and numerous civil servants. She describes herself as being incredibly proud of the National Health Service and its many improvements.
St Nicholas Church invites you to put the date in your diary now.
Coventry Julian Meeting 2009 -‘Waiting on God in the Silence’
An ecumenical group for silent Christian contemplative prayer
Julian Meetings are groups of people who meet together regularly to grow in the practice of silent contemplative prayer in the Christian tradition. Julian meetings are for people of all denominations, or none.
At a Julian Meeting we sit together in a circle and seek to be open and attentive to the presence of God in the silence. A short reading and/or piece of music leads into 30 minutes of silent prayer. Waiting on God in silence, listening to Him, resting in Him. Refreshments and conversation follow the time of prayer for those who wish to stay.
The Meeting is held at Earlsdon Methodist Church Upper Room, corner of Earlsdon Avenue South and Albany Road. Doors will be open from 7pm and the meeting will start at 7.30 prompt. The meetings are on the third Thursday of each month, and the dates for 2009 20th August, 17th September, 15th October and 19th November. No meeting during May or December.
People can join us once, occasionally or regularly as convenient for them. If you have any questions or require information on disabled access facilities, contact Ann Moran, tel 024 7671 4649. email a.amoran@btopenworld.com
