DFID GRANT TO HELP COVENTRY CHARITY 11th May 2008 | Download | Email to a Friend

Fair trade football tournaments, radio lessons for schoolchildren in developing countries and farm visits for 5-11 year olds are among the new projects sharing a £5.5m Government funding boost, Secretary of State for International Development Douglas Alexander announced .

The new Development Awareness Fund (DAF) will back 26 new projects designed to help more people – from schoolchildren to community and faith groups – get personally involved in fighting global poverty.

The International Centre for Reconciliation at Coventry Cathedral is to receive over £295,000 to run a project encouraging young people to become advocates for fair trade. The project aims to train 180 people from Coventry’s youth clubs, schools and colleges who will then go on to promote the purchasing of fairly traded goods in their communities. It will also include three ‘Unity Cup’ football tournaments, an international youth conference and a website designed by the team of ‘youth advocates’.

David Williams, Project Leader for Local Reconciliation said:

.This project is a wonderful opportunity to educate young people about the influence that their purchasing decisions can have on reducing poverty. It is hoped that through an increased understanding they will change their spending patterns and go on to educate others about how important this is.

Douglas Alexander, Secretary of State for International Development, said:

“This is the latest in DFID’s drive to involve British people from all walks of life in tackling poverty in developing countries.”
