The Chaplain with the Deaf people offers:
- Pastoral support for all profoundly deaf, partially deaf, deafened, deaf-blind and hard of hearing people in the Coventry Diocese. In Coventry alone, there are approximately 5000 people who are registered as profoundly deaf
- Conducting or assisting at baptisms, funerals and weddings for Deaf people
- British Sign Language (BSL) interpretation. The Chaplain holds the NVQ3 in BSL
- Guidance to churches and institutions regarding the Disability Discrimination Act, and how this impacts on all types of deafness.
- Deaf awareness training to churches and institutions.
- A six week introductory course in British Sign Language (BSL). This course is free of charge and is open to all churches and institutions, and if there is a group interested then they should contact the Chaplain.
- Upon completion of this course, many go on to study the CACDP level 1 in BSL.
- Away days and retreats for all types of Deaf people.
New 2007/2008
- Workshops in Christian British Sign Language (BSL). These 1 day workshops are aimed at Deaf or hearing people who are studying BSL at CACDP level 2 and above. These are taught workshops that look at how BSL is used in churches and Christian worship, and applicants should book in advance. Please contact Chaplain.
- Saturday 29th September 10:30 - 3:30pm at Coventry University Spirituality & Faith Centre (previously Coventry University Chaplaincy) - “An introduction to using BSL in churches and worship”
- Saturday 24th November 10:30 - 3:30pm at Coventry University Spirituality & Faith Centre - “Using BSL in hymns and songs”
- Saturday 23rd February 2008 10:30 - 3:30pm at Coventry University Spirituality & Faith Centre - “The Easter account in BSL”
- Saturday 26th April 2008 10:30 - 3:30pm at Coventry University Spirituality & Faith Centre - “Telling the parables in BSL”
- Saturday 14th June 2008 10:30-3:30pm at Coventry University Spirituality & Faith Centre - “Interpreting baptisms, funerals and weddings in BSL” (This course is only for interpreters and those studying NVQ3 and above).
- Deaf CAMEO (Come And Meet Each Other)
From the 4th June 2007, this trial event in BSL runs weekly on a Monday evening 7:30pm at Coventry University Spirituality & Faith Centre. It is a Deaf social time, where there will be group activities, guest speakers, fellowship and nice refreshments.

From Jordan Well, turn left onto Cox Street, then take an immediate right through an arch way that is ‘Cox Street Car Park ’ (see map - P2).
From the car park, head in the direction of the Cathedral. Follow the path to the right. In front of you, is the Alan Berry building (see map – building no. 1). Go through the doors that are ahead of you. It has a sign above the door which says ‘Alan Berry Basement. Chaplaincy'

Coventry Deaf Church
Meets on the first Sunday of each month at 3pm. From beginning to end, the Deaf people are involved in the service with reading, prayers, preaching, leading responses and giving notices. The service is conducted in BSL and voice over is provided.
The Deaf Church meets at Christ Church, Frankpledge Road, Cheylesmore, Coventry CV3 5GT
There are approximately 60-70 members. Everyone is welcome.
Deaf ALPHA
Here are those who attended Deaf Alpha 2005/2006!

The 2007/2008 Deaf Alpha begins on at the Henry Fry Deaf Club on Thursday 13th September and runs fortnightly until July 2008.
The organising committee consists of the Chaplain, Martin Evans, Dilys Arthurson and Carol Bennington (administrator txt: 07749020855).
