News Poster If Matthew were writing today, perhaps he'd be working in Hollywood. The final scene of his gospel is exactly what we're used to in the final scene of a screenplay, as the camera pulls away from close or medium shot and the characters whose story we have been intensely focused on become smaller and begin to fade in to the distance, and the finally the credits begin to roll. Matthew gives us a 'helicopter shot' as we see Jesus give his final words to the disciples on the top of a mountain, pointing out to the world all around, promising to be with them always, before the camera pulls away and the music swells and we're left to view them as God does, a tiny band on top of a mountain in Galilee while the whole landscape of Israel and then the Mediterranean unfolds before us. Well, maybe! But the final scene of Matthew's gospel is a climactic one, full both of reminders of the past but also of the possibilities of the future. (more...)

News Poster I remember a wet morning at primary school, struggling to get through my work so that I could go and play with my friends at the side of the classroom. Playtime had been suspended because of the weather and so the teacher, Mrs More, allowed us fifteen minutes or so in turn to play, as it was an old Victorian school without a lot of space in it. At last it was done. My hand went up: 'I've completely finished' I said. Mrs More, who was kindly, motherly soul, looked down at me: 'Richard, you never completely finish.
