| 'I saw the old cathedral as standing clearly for the sacrifice, one side of the Christian Faith and I knew my task was to design a new one which should stand for the Triumph of the Resurrection'. That was the vision of Basil Spence, architect of Coventry's new Cathedral, when he first conceived its design following the wartime bombing of the city and its Cathedral. His work, completed 50 years ago in 1962, became a symbol of the resurrection not only of a city but of a country and continent rising from the destruction of war into the new possibilities of peace and prosperity. | My run up to Easter has actually been a long walk! I've been on a Pilgrimage beginning in South Warwickshire, circling Coventry on the Coventry Way, taking in much of North Warwickshire along the route. Many other pilgrims across Coventry and Warwickshire were following this or other trails through city and county. We all converged – hundreds of us – in Coventry Cathedral of the evening of Palm Sunday: the day that Jesus entered Jerusalem. (more...) |

| Today, Easter Day, just as first light was dawning, before most of the city and county was awake, I was baptising people in Coventry Cathedral. What a place to be baptised – the Cathedral that was built to be symbol of - as its architect, Basil Spence, said - the 'triumph of the resurrection'. And what a year to be baptised in this Cathedral of the resurrection – the Jubilee Year, the year we celebrate its 50th birthday. (more...) |

| The beginning of last week was a very moving time for the nation. On 5th February we looked back sixty years to when King George VI returned to Sandringham House after a successful shoot. 'We will go after the hares again tomorrow,' he said to his servant of twenty years. But tomorrow never came for The King. He died peacefully in his sleep during the night. (more...) |
